How we got to the "middle."

I’m Danielle, past kindergarten teacher turned stay-at-home Momma to boy girl twins, Landen and Caroline, Parker and Riggs our rescue pup.

In 2018 we left our new build in suburbia and moved to the country to the Wehr Historic Homestead based on a "gut feeling" I had. We had a few requirements that were "must haves" and one day we found a place we couldn't let go even though it was risky in so many ways.  So we went with our gut and chose an 1837 federal style home with the intent to restore and preserve this piece of American history.

My husband, Aaron, is a play it safe kinda guy and I’m the dreamer who gave him a good nudge to take this crazy plunge. It was a rough start when we moved in-you know bathroom falling in, water in the kitchen, sparking appliances, and believe it or not a whole lot more. How I ever thought moving in the winter, with three kids (one still an infant), to a home that needed TONS of work was a good idea is beyond me....but I knew it was time to stop talking about our dreams and start living them.

Moving, into our now home, was one of the craziest plunges Aaron and I have ever taken and it now being roughly years later since we moved in, we are overwhelmingly happy we lost our “good sense” and moved to the country. During our time here so far, we've accomplished more than we can remember. I have a journal of our first year here for that very reason-it's so easy to forget how far you've come sometimes.

In addition to caring for they physical structure of the home, I have found myself to now be a lover of local history. In the little bit of time here and there that I have had, I have been researching the Wehr family who settled and built our home after hearing from locals the house rumored to be a part of the Underground Railroad. In the past two years I have learned the Wehr family were one of the first settlers in the area, the home served as a tavern stop to hog drivers, were well respected by those in the community and were exceptional farmers (and so much more!). I have also been fortunate enough to connect to the descendants of the Wehr's and learn an abundance of things about their family.  With being out of the classroom for about four years now, I never thought I would have the opportunity to teach but because of my research I have been given opportunities to share what I have learned.

Since becoming the caretakers of the Wehr Homestead, we’ve been abundantly blessed in the most unexpected ways that only He could possibly make possible. While the Homestead has need a lot of our love and attention, she continues to give us the daily gift of feeling at home. Not only have we been given that gift, we’ve been given the gift of relationships we never saw coming. The people who have came into our lives whether briefly or our forever new family and friends, have provided myself and our family with memories which we will cherish for a lifetime.
We hope that when you stop in on this page you will say hello! We love talking about family, faith, food and old house love. Most importantly we hope our story encourages you to not ignore those signs from above and to trust God has an even better plan for you than you could ever imagine.
We look forward to hearing from you!
